Koike: New Games Chief Should Represent Diversity

Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko says the new president of the Tokyo organizing committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games should be a leader who can send a message of diversity and harmony.
Koike spoke to reporters on Friday after committee president Mori Yoshiro offered to resign over remarks that were criticized as demeaning to women.
The governor said the world is watching how transparent the process of choosing Mori's successor will be. She pointed out that attention is also focused on how the new chief will represent the spirit of the Olympic Charter.
She stressed the chance to send the message of diversity and harmony to the world.
Koike urged the committee to ensure that the selection process is transparent and help erase the anxieties of athletes, volunteers and torch-relay runners.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says at least 126 "City Volunteers" have withdrawn since Mori made the controversial remarks. Such volunteers are to provide transport and tourism information to visitors during the Games.
Asked how she will respond if those who have withdrawn change their mind because Mori is stepping down, Koike said she wants them to take part.
