Minister To Counter Baseless Wastewater Rumors
Japan's industry minister says he will lead the efforts to counter baseless rumors about the disposal of radioactive wastewater from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
The water used to cool molten nuclear fuel is treated but still contains tritium and some other radioactive substances. The treated water is being stored in tanks at the plant.
Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Kajiyama Hiroshi said on Friday that explanations based on science are needed, as well as objective and transparent information disclosure.
Kajiyama said the International Atomic Energy Agency has agreed to objectively confirm the safety of the wastewater disposal process. He said the IAEA will disclose this information in a transparent manner in Japan and the rest of the world.
Kajiyama stressed that these measures will help to suppress any baseless rumors about the wastewater.
