Mitsubishi Electric Ceo To Resign
Mitsubishi Electric President and CEO Sugiyama Takeshi says he will step down over a data fabrication scandal.
Sugiyama made the announcement at a news conference on Friday. It follows revelations that a factory has been faking inspection checks for train equipment it manufactures.
The falsified data covers air conditioners, as well as air compressors that are used to control train doors and brakes. The products are made at a plant in Nagasaki Prefecture.
Clients were provided with fake performance certificates. The misconduct has spanned more than three decades.
"We have always told our employees that product quality is the most important thing, and should be prioritized over profit and delivery deadlines. But it seems like they decided that the quality was already so high that they didn't need to conduct the necessary tests," Sugiyama explained.
He said he decided to resign because the company needs to regain trust under new leadership.
An internal investigation discovered software that has been used to fabricate inspection results.
Mitsubishi is now looking into the cause of the misconduct and expects to have a full report by September.
