Mori To Offer To Resign As Tokyo Games Chief
The head of the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Mori Yoshiro, is expected to officially offer to step down on Friday.
Mori is to attend a hastily arranged joint session of the committee's executive board and the board of councilors. He is expected to resign to take responsibility for his controversial remarks about women.
Last week, Mori said board meetings with women take too long because they talk too much.
The comments were strongly criticized in Japan and around the world. Mori retracted them and apologized.
A former chairman of Japan's professional soccer league, Kawabuchi Saburo, has been asked to replace Mori. He has reportedly agreed to take on the job.
Kawabuchi will also attend the meeting.
Some members of the executive board and the International Olympic Committee have noted that the selection process for Mori's successor needs to be transparent.
Friday's meeting will be closed to the public apart from the opening. The meeting will be followed by a news conference.
