National Police Agency To Review Security Arrangements For Abe
Japan's National Police Agency will review security arrangements for former prime minister Abe Shinzo following his fatal shooting.
Abe was shot from behind on Friday, while giving a speech in the western city of Nara. He was confirmed dead after arriving at hospital. His alleged attacker was arrested at the scene.
The agency says the Nara prefectural police drew up a security plan for Abe while he was in the city.
Agency officials say the prefecture's police officers and security personnel from Tokyo Metropolitan police were on the lookout during Abe's speech.
The officials did not disclose how many officers were on site, but security sources say several dozens were deployed. The number included one specially assigned personnel from the Tokyo police force and the prefecture's plain-clothed police officers.
Abe was reportedly being watched by the officers from all sides, even behind him.
But their efforts failed to prevent the former prime minister from being shot.
A video taken by a person near the scene shows the suspect slowly approaching Abe from behind. But police officers were not seen stopping him until gunshots were heard.
