Nikkei 225 Down Sharply
Tokyo's benchmark stock index fell sharply on Tuesday, as investors acted on concerns that high inflation in the US and Europe may be prolonged. Many are also concerned that tightening measures by central banks could lead to a global economic slowdown.
The Nikkei Average ended the day at 26,336, down 475 points, or nearly 1.8 percent, from Monday's close. Investors unloaded shares almost across the board.
A resurgence of coronavirus cases in Japan, China and other countries also worsened investor sentiment.
The Nikkei 225 had risen for 3 straight trading days until Monday. That was due to buy orders for export-related shares on the back of a weaker yen.
The ruling coalition's sweeping victory in Japan's Upper House election was another factor. Some investors took profits from the gains.
