Oecd Urges Public Engagement In Fukushima Policies
A nuclear body of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has issued a report on the lessons and challenges posed by the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant 10 years ago.
The report released by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency on Wednesday explains how the Japanese government has dealt with the aftermath of the accident and how it has impacted the world.
The report says the Japanese government's efforts have led to the implementation of plant improvements against natural phenomena such as earthquakes and floods, and safety improvements aimed at blackout threats to core cooling and backup electrical power.
It points out that the accident showed how easily public trust in nuclear power generation can be lost and how hard it is to get it back.
It also says the Fukushima Daiichi experience has spurred a rethink about the role of stakeholders in nuclear policy decision making by governments and industries.
The report stresses that the further involvement of local residents, local authorities and NGOs in making decisions regarding reactor decommissioning and reconstruction policies is crucial for winning credibility and justification.
