Okinawa Urged To Brace For Landslides And Flooding
In Japan's southern prefecture Okinawa, residents of the rain-hit main island are being urged to stay on alert for landslides and flooding.
Japan's Meteorological Agency says a band of rain clouds developed over the northern part of the island early Tuesday as warm, moist air flowed in toward a stationary seasonal rain front.
Radar images show the area around Nago City had about 160 millimeters of precipitation over a three-hour period through 3 a.m.
The agency issued a warning in the form of information on heavy rain inundation and landslides for the main island. This information supplements an alert of level-four or above on a scale of one to five. It's the first time the warning has been issued since it was added to the list of weather advisories on June 17.
Some parts of the island can expect hourly rainfall of up to 50 millimeters.
The agency is urging continued caution for flooding in low-lying areas, river swelling, lightning strikes and tornadoes.
