One Climber Dies In Nagano Mountain Avalanche

One man has been pronounced dead after being engulfed by an avalanche in central Japan, on a mountain straddling Nagano and Gifu prefectures.

The avalanche occurred on Sunday morning, hitting five climbers on the Nagano side of Mount Norikura.

A 49-year-old man was found with no vital signs and was confirmed dead on Sunday night. Two other men suffered minor injuries and two were unharmed.

The collapsed area was about 200 meters wide and 300 meters long, located above the highest point of a ski slope.

Police say fresh snow may have collapsed.

Meteorological Agency officials say the risk of more avalanches will increase in Nagano Prefecture as the temperature is forecast to rise from Monday.

They are advising people to monitor the latest weather forecasts if they plan to enter snow-covered mountains.
