Osaka Murder Suspect May Be Hiding At His Relatives' Home In Brazil
Brazilian media say a man originally from the country, suspected of murdering his wife and daughter at their home in Osaka, western Japan, may be hiding in the residence of his relatives in Brazil.
Police in Osaka placed 33-year-old Barbosa Anderson Robson on the nationwide wanted list on Wednesday on suspicion that he fatally stabbed his wife and daughter sometime between August 20 and 21.
His 29-year-old wife Aramaki Manami and their 3-year-old daughter Lily were found dead in their apartment in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, on August 24.
Two days before, Barbosa reportedly phoned his workplace and said he would take a two-week leave of absence because he had been involved in an accident.
Police have learned that the suspect departed from Narita Airport, near Tokyo, for Brazil on that day.
Investigative sources told NHK that a message was sent from his wife's smartphone to her mother on the day the suspect left Japan for Brazil.
The message asked her not to visit the apartment where Barbosa lived with his family.
Police believe he sent the text because he wanted to delay the discovery of the bodies. The smartphone has not been found yet. Investigators believe it was carried away by the suspect.
Police are making arrangements to place the suspect on the international wanted list.
There is no extradition treaty between Japan and Brazil. The Japanese government may ask Brazil to prosecute the man under its law unless he comes back to Japan.
