Search Continues Two Weeks After Sinking Of Tour Boat In Northern Japan

Search continues two weeks after sinking of tour boat in northern Japan

It has been two weeks since a search began for people who went missing after a tour boat sank off Hokkaido, northern Japan.

The "KAZU I" sank off the Shiretoko Peninsula during a sightseeing cruise on April 23. Of the 26 people on board, 14 people have been confirmed dead and 12 others remain missing.

The Japan Coast Guard, Self-Defense Forces and others are searching the sea around the peninsula on Friday. Coast guard vessels are also looking for the missing near Kunashiri Island. It is one of four Russian-controlled islands claimed by Japan.

The search inside the sunken boat has not made any progress after a police underwater camera entered on Tuesday.

The coast guard has requested that a salvage company investigate the accident site. The company's vessel is expected to arrive at the site on Saturday at the earliest. It plans to send an unmanned submersible and divers to check the sunken boat.
