Snowstorm Forecast For Northern, Central Japan

Weather officials are warning of snowstorms in northern Japan and the Sea of Japan side of the central part of the country through Tuesday.
The Meteorological Agency says a low pressure system will pass over northern Japan, while developing rapidly.
Wind gusts of up to 126 kilometers per hour are forecast for Hokkaido and Niigata prefectures, and up to 108 kilometers per hour for the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions.
Snow is expected to intensify due to a cold air mass.
In the 24 hours through Tuesday evening, up to 70 centimeters of snowfall is forecast for Niigata Prefecture, 60 centimeters for the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions, and 40 centimeters for Hokkaido.
In addition to heavy snow and strong winds, officials are calling on people to be alert for icy roads, high waves, avalanches, tornadoes and lightning strikes.
