Suga Pledges Japan's Leadership To Cop26 President
Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide has said Japan is willing to lead the global effort in tackling climate change. He made the pledge in a meeting with COP26 President Alok Sharma on Monday.
The two met at the Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo, before the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference is held in Britain in November.
Suga told Sharma that climate change is a pressing challenge for the international community.
He said Japan will cooperate in making the UN conference a success and lead the international community's efforts to create a carbon-free world.
Sharma thanked Suga for his personal leadership and that of his government on the issue of climate change. He also thanked Japan for its commitment to make the country carbon-neutral by 2050.
Suga mentioned a phone call in February with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, saying they had meaningful discussions.
Suga said he expects to see leadership from Britain, which will chair a Group of Seven summit in June as well as the November COP26 meeting.
