Tokyo Games Committee Board To Have More Women
The organizing committee of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games has decided to increase the ratio of women on its board to 40 percent by adding 12 more women.
The organizing committee on Tuesday held a board meeting to discuss a plan to increase the number of female board members.
The measure is part of the committee's reform efforts that began after the former committee president, Mori Yoshiro, resigned over remarks criticized as belittling women.
Currently, the committee board has 34 members, including seven women.
The board decided to increase the number of its members to 45, of which 19 will be woman.
The organizing committee has not made public the names of new member candidates. But it says they will include marathon gold medalist at the Sydney Games Takahashi Naoko and two-time gold medalist in Paralympic Alpen skiing Obinata Kuniko.
The committee also says it plans to nominate candidates from former athletes and experts on gender equality.
The committee will hold a council meeting on Wednesday to approve the plan.
The organizing committee's director general, Muto Toshiro, said it will send out a message with substance from its recently-inaugurated team working to promote gender equality.
