Tokyo Games Events For Visitors To Be Scaled Down
The organizing committee for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics has decided to scale down sports experience events and other operations planned for visitors at the capital's waterfront area during the games.
The committee made the decision as part of its efforts to prevent coronavirus infections.
The area called Tokyo Waterfront City will incorporate seven games venues as well as the Olympic and Paralympic cauldron.
It was also supposed to feature food stalls, large stores selling the games' licensed products, and a place where visitors could watch athletes while they train.
But the committee is considering ways to prevent crowding in the area. Possible options include canceling food stalls and requiring reservations for the training viewing space.
Tokyo 2020 Director General Muto Toshiro said the area has an important concept of familiarizing young people with sports through the Olympics.
But he added the committee will cut back on festive activities from an anti-infection standpoint. Muto also said the committee is considering appropriate measures to prevent people from gathering around the cauldron.
