Tokyo Governor Vows Pre - Emptive Measures To Fight Covid Resurgence
Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko says taking pre-emptive measures to prevent deaths from the coronavirus is the key for fighting the current rise in new infections. She says Tokyo officials will support people who test positive to ensure they don't become seriously ill.
She was speaking on Wednesday as daily case counts in the Japanese capital more than doubled from a week ago for the second straight day.
Koike said the rate of increase in case numbers has topped 1.5, showing how quickly infections are spreading.
The governor said Tokyo's hospital bed occupancy rates are lower than during the sixth wave of infections.
She said the Tokyo government has already prepared medical and testing systems to handle the current situation.
Koike urged people to get a third vaccine shot, saying the effectiveness of the vaccines against the virus falls among those who haven't had a booster.
