Torrential Downpours In Kyushu, More Rain In Tohoku
Rainfall is intensifying in many parts of Japan, triggering warnings of landslides and flooding. Some places on the southwestern island of Kyushu have had torrential downpours.
The Meteorological Agency is urging people to be on the alert as a stationary rain front continues to affect western and eastern Japan. They also say the northern Tohoku region, which has seen record precipitation, may get pounded again.
Agency officials say moist air is flowing into a stationary front over the Sea of Japan, bringing heavy rain to wide areas.
Landslide warnings have been issued for some areas of Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Ishikawa prefectures.
Officials say that localized downpours of more than 50 millimeters per hour are possible in eastern and western Japan. They say places along the Sea of Japan coast could get more, up to 80 millimeters per hour.
Tohoku is expected to have more heavy rain on Thursday as a low pressure system approaches.
