Tropical Storm Aere Becomes Low - Pressure System

The Japan Meteorological Agency says tropical storm Aere has become a low pressure system after making landfall in Nagasaki Prefecture in western Japan early Tuesday. Weather officials continue to warn of heavy rainfall in many parts of the country.
Rain and winds intensified in Kyushu as the storm approached. More than 120 millimeters of rain per hour are believed to have fallen in parts of Nagasaki, Fukuoka and Kumamoto prefectures.
Torrential rain continued overnight in Kochi Prefecture, western Japan. Susaki City had more than 350 millimeters of rainfall in the 12 hours through early Tuesday, marking a new record.
Humid air flowing from the south is making atmospheric conditions unstable over wide areas of western Japan.
Eastern and northern Japan may also experience heavier rain than expected.
Officials are warning residents to be prepared for flooding in low-lying areas, landslides, lightning and tornadoes.
