Tropical Storm Aere Heads Toward Southwestern Japan
Tropical storm Aere is moving north toward Japan's southwestern main island of Kyushu, after passing near Okinawa. It is expected to come very close to Kyushu, possibly making landfall there on Tuesday.
Weather officials are warning of heavy rainfall in western and eastern Japan.
The Meteorological Agency says warm and humid air is flowing into southern Kyushu. Rain clouds are developing in western and central regions.
Fukui City in central Japan recorded about 80 millimeters of rain per hour on Sunday.
Officials forecast Aere will move north over the East China Sea. After approaching the Kyushu region, the storm system is expected to move toward western and eastern parts of Japan.
In Okinawa, at least 2 people were injured on Sunday. Some rivers in central and western regions reached flood warning levels at one time.
Officials are urging people to stay alert for mudslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and swollen rivers. They're also warning of possible lightning strikes, tornadoes, and gusts of wind.
