Ugandan Olympian Has Delta Variant

Japan's minister for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games says the Ugandan Olympic member who tested positive for the coronavirus upon arrival in Japan has been found to be infected with the Delta variant first identified in India.
The nine-member Ugandan team arrived at Narita airport near Tokyo last Saturday. His infection was detected at the airport quarantine station.
The other team members transferred to Izumisano City in Osaka Prefecture for a training camp.
All were later designated by health authorities in the prefecture as having had close contact with the infected person.
A second member also tested positive in the host city on Wednesday.
Marukawa Tamayo said on Friday that the government is sequencing the genome of the virus in the second case. She added that they are studying ways on how to quickly determine and share information, how to isolate and treat infected individuals, and how to strengthen quarantine for arrivals.
Izumisano City said on Thursday that two drivers and two attendants who were on the bus, as well as three city officials, have been designated as having had close contact with the infected team members.
