Victims Of 2020 Kumamoto Rain Disaster Remembered

People in Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan, have memorialized victims of a record rainfall that killed dozens of people one year ago.
Sunday marks one year since the disaster that killed 67 people, including those who died in its aftermath. Two people remain unaccounted for.
Sirens were sounded on Sunday morning to mourn victims in the village of Kuma, where 25 people died.
People offered silent prayers along the Kuma River, which flooded due to heavy rain.
About 30 people took part in a memorial event in the city of Hitoyoshi, where the rain claimed 21 lives. Some of the victims' relatives were in attendance.
Another event was held in the city of Yashiro. Four people died in a town in the area.
A resident said he lost his uncle, and that the feeling of deep sorrow inside him breaks his heart.
Nearly 3,700 people in areas affected by the disaster remain in temporary housing.
