Nissan’s new Z car, which is said to borrow Infiniti’s twin-turbo V6, is right around the corner. However, it must not be soon enough for one industrious shop that swapped that same engine into a 370Z.
Volkswagen of America has unveiled a new accessory line for its latest crossover, the Taos. Buyers will be able to option the little crossover with a series of visual upgrades that provide it with a more rugged appearance.
Like a bear emerging from a cave after a winter in hibernation, Toyota is holding a press event at its Texas headquarters this week and released a deluge of news along with it. We figured it would be useful to see it all in one spot since there's a little something for everyone, including the electric bz4x concept, the 2022 Tacoma TRD Pro and Trail Edition, U.S. specs for the GR 86 and all-new Corolla Cross, and a sneak preview of the next-generation Lexus NX. With News Editor Joel Stocksdale on the ground in Plano, we expect a few more tidbits to trickle out from the Toyotathon as well.
Toyota will build a hybrid version of its new Corolla Cross, the company confirmed during a media briefing Wednesday. The new compact crossover will hit showrooms with just a run-of-the-mill four-cylinder, with the new hybrid powertrain coming later, likely for the 2023 or 2024 model year at the earliest.
At launch, the Corolla Cross will be offered only with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 169 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque paired to a CVT. That powertrain will be offered in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and the latter gets a fancy multilink suspension setup in lieu of the FWD model's torsion beam. Toyota estimates the 2.0's fuel economy will be a bit worse than a Corolla Hatchback's, coming in at 32 mpg combined for front-wheel drive, and 30 mpg for all-wheel drive, leaving room above it for a more fuel-efficient hybrid.
Lexus is nearly ready to introduce the second-generation NX. It released a postcard-like preview image of the crossover with the planet's seventh-highest peak located on an island.
"The future of Lexus is just on the horizon," the company explained in a release accompanying the image. That's a little misleading; the photo shows Mount Fuji, a 12,388-foot high volcano in Japan, on the horizon. It's what's in the foreground that's about to break cover.
A Toyota Mirai has set a new world record for the longest distance traveled on a single tank of hydrogen for a production car.
Last year's big Supra news was heavily focused on mechanical updates. The original 335 hp 3.0-liter six was upgraded to the 382 hp version previously reserved for the Supra’s BMW Z4 M40i cousin, and was joined for the first time by the 2.0-litre turbo four fitted to lesser Z4s.
Toyota has unveiled two new grades for the Tacoma lineup, the TRD Pro and the Trail Edition 4×4. Both are designed with a view to improving the pickup’s off-roading capabilities.
It's that time of year again: Supra time! Changes for the 2022 Toyota GR Supra dropped today, and the headliner is a new special edition named the A91-Carbon Fiber Edition. It's nicknamed the rather forgettable A91-CF Edition, and it's about exactly what you'd expect from something with carbon fiber in the name.
The A91-CF Edition adds a new carbon fiber front splitter, larger canards, carbon fiber side rockers, carbon fiber duckbill spoiler and lower rear canards. Toyota says the extra aero bits combine to improve downforce and stability both on the road and on the track, so it's not all show. It also comes with unique 19-inch wheels painted matte black. Exterior paint options include Phantom (also matte), Zero White and Nitro Yellow.
There's no shortage of off-road focused Toyota Tacoma trims, and two of them are getting even more capability. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and Tacoma Trail Edition each feature a number of updates that make them more ready for dirt and rocks than before.
The TRD Pro is the ultimate Tacoma off-roader, and its updates come with the suspension. The suspension lift has increased by about half an inch over last year. Compared with a regular Tacoma, it sits 1.5 inches higher up front and half an inch higher at the back. It also gets special forged-aluminum upper control arms at the front to keep the suspension geometry correct with the increased suspension travel. The added height improves approach, breakover and depature angles, which are 36.4, 26.6 and 24.7 degrees respectively. The TRD Pro naturally gets some carryover upgrades, too, such as custom skid plates, Fox 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks, a cat-back exhaust and LED headlights and fog lights.
The seemingly inevitable has happened, the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is coming to the United States. The country's insatiable appetite for crossovers of all sizes, so it was only natural to slide this model underneath the RAV4 and above the C-HR into the niche we've come to call the "in-betweener" segment for lack of a better term. And as the name would imply, it is basically a Corolla underneath, but made bigger and more aggressive looking.
You can see the frowning front and more upright shape, but harder to see is the size increase compared to the Corolla it's based on. It's 3.6 inches longer, 1.4 inches wider and 7.7 inches taller than a Corolla Hatchback. It also boasts 3 more inches of ground clearance. This also translates to another inch or two of head, leg and shoulder room for passengers front and rear, as well as a bit more cargo space. Depending on whether you get your Corolla Cross with a sunroof, it will have either 24.3 cubic feet or 25.5 of cargo space, which is just a little less than the Kia Seltos. The Corolla Hatchback has 17.8 cubic feet as standard, and 23 when optioned with a tire inflation kit instead of a spare tire. Additionally, the Corolla Cross is rated for 1,500 pounds of towing.
Toyota has released some of the details and specifications of the 2022 GR 86, and go figure, they're almost identical to its twin, the Subaru BRZ. Still, they do represent an improvement over the previous model.
Under the hood is the 2.4-liter flat-four now making 228 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. The increase in power comes from an increased bore, as well as revisions to the intake, exhaust and fuel injection system. Arguably more important is that the torque peak now comes at 3,700 rpm instead of the sky-high 6,600 rpm of its predecessor. The engine can be paired with a manual transmission for a 0-60 mph time of 6.1 seconds (0.9 faster than before) or an automatic for a time of 6.6 seconds (1.4 faster than previously). Rear-drive remains the only drive option, and a limited-slip differential is standard.
There's a new TRD trim level coming to the 2022 Toyota 4Runner, but it's not another off-road-focused one. Instead, the 4Runner is taking a page out of the Tacoma's book and adding a road-focused TRD Sport variant for 2022.
Similar to the Tacoma's setup, the 4Runner TRD Sport pairs enhanced styling with targeted upgrades to make the big SUV more enjoyable on the road. The big mechanical change is its use of the Limited trim's Cross-Linked Relative Absorber System (X-REAS) suspension. It features adaptive dampers that react to the road's surface in real time. Plus, there's a center control absorber that links the shocks on opposite sides of the vehicle together to help reduce pitch and yaw by attempting to offset the road's inputs.
