Toyota 86, Subaru Brz Stay The Course ... That's Ok.

Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ stay the course ... that's OK.

As you get older, you realize you need less of some things. Alcohol. Sleep. Horsepower. Five beers turns to three, which inevitably turns to a glass of LaCroix over ice. It's simplification. So is the case of the Toyota 86 and it's still nearly identical twin, the Subaru BRZ.

The 2022 Toyota GR 86 debuted Monday and sales kick off in the United States this fall. It's listed with 232 horsepower derived from the Subaru-sourced boxer-four cylinder, up just a tick -- four ponies -- from the new BRZ's figure. Toyota hasn't confirmed U.S. specs yet, but expect a similar output nominally ahead of Subaru, as Toyota says it's tuning the 86 more aggressively for performance. We'll see. Regardless, the new 2.4-liter mill offers a nice leap over the current cars' 205-hp 2.0-liter four. Plus, torque is now 184 pound-feet at 3,700 rpm, compared with the 156 lb-ft rating at 6,400 rpm of the 2020 Toyota 86. That will change the feel of the acceleration in a good way.

Toyota's New 86 Breaks Cover As The Subaru Brz's Friendly Rival

Toyota's new 86 breaks cover as the Subaru BRZ's friendly rival

Toyota put recent rumors of a months-long delay to rest by unveiling the second-generation 86 online. Positioned below the Supra, and called GR 86 in Japan, the coupe is again closely related to the Subaru BRZ.

Viewed from the side or from the back, the GR 86 is nearly identical to the second-generation BRZ introduced in the fall of 2020. Only brand-specific wheel designs and emblems set the two cars apart. It's a slightly different story up front, where the 86 receives a redesigned front bumper with a bigger grille and smaller air intakes. If you want to play seven differences, here's a photo of the 86 and the BRZ parked side by side.

Junkyard Gem: 1981 Toyota Tercel Hatchback

Junkyard Gem: 1981 Toyota Tercel Hatchback

The original Tercel was the first Toyota sold in North America with front-wheel-drive, with the first-generation cars available here for the 1980 through 1982 model years. Initially badged as Corolla Tercels, in order to cash in on the name recognition established by the bulletproof Corollas sold here during the 1970s (more recently, Toyota did the same thing by calling the Aqua the Prius C over here), these cars had tiny price tags and little need for fuel. Unfortunately, the Rust Monster saw the first-gen Tercels as tasty appetizers and consumed most of these cars decades ago. Here's an '81 hatch that beat the odds and came close to the magical 300,000-mile mark during its 40-year career, now residing in a self-service yard between Denver and Cheyenne.

Mitsubishi Is Auctioning Its Entire Uk Heritage Fleet With No Reserve

Mitsubishi is auctioning its entire UK heritage fleet with no reserve

Mitsubishi will exit the United Kingdom in the fall of 2021 after struggling for several years, and its losses can be your gain. Before it leaves, it will auction its fleet of 14 beautifully-preserved classic models with no reserve.

There are 14 classics that need a new home, and the collection includes something for everyone. Enthusiasts can bid on a 1974 Lancer 1400 that stands out as the first Mitsubishi ever registered in the United Kingdom. It was displayed at the 1974 edition of the British Motor Show, and it's bid to 15,000 pounds (around $20,800) as of writing. Another 47-year-old classic is a Colt Galant 2.0 imported to the United Kingdom in the spring of 1974 and used as a demonstrator to recruit dealers. It's currently sitting at 5,000 pounds, which represents about $7,000.

2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross First Drive Review | A Welcome Improvement

2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross First Drive Review | A welcome improvement

We've considered the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross a better-than-expected option in a mostly uninspiring vehicular segment ever since it was introduced for the 2018 model year. It's sized and priced somewhere between subcompact and compact crossovers, making it an in-betweener that may attract some buyers due to its distinctive positioning. And it's been given a pretty comprehensive refresh for the 2022 model year that erases a few of our complaints and makes it more compelling, especially against subcompact crossover models like the Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR.

In an odd bit of launch timing that we figure was probably shaken up by a certain global pandemic, there's no 2021 edition. The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross isn't a total redesign — it rides on the same platform and is powered by the same engine and transmission as before — but the exterior design has been given a serious makeover while the interior gets some nice ergonomic upgrades that will make it easier to live with on a daily basis.

Toyota Land Cruiser 78 Upgraded To Deliver Vaccines To Remote Areas

Toyota Land Cruiser 78 upgraded to deliver vaccines to remote areas

While coronavirus vaccine production and distribution is ramping up across the globe, there are still plenty of hurdles to overcome. In particular, there's the issue of getting vaccines to remote parts of the globe. To help with that, Toyota, in collaboration with B-Medical Systems, has developed a special version of the Land Cruiser 78 commercial SUV, the large-capacity version of the 70 Series, to deliver vaccines. It's also the first one approved by the World Health Organization for delivery duty.

It's a fairly simple upfit. B-Medical Systems created a refrigerator that would fit onboard the Land Cruiser with an overall volume of about 14 cubic feet. The refrigerator is powered by the SUV while it's running, but it also has a battery that will keep it cooled for up to 16 hours without being powered by the SUV or being plugged in to another power source. As for the Land Cruiser 78, it's not particularly unique, but with its 4.5-liter turbodiesel engine, low-range four-wheel-drive system, solid axles front and rear, and a history dating back to the 1980s, it's capable enough with easily available parts to make it an ideal transporter around the world.

2021 Toyota 4runner Review | What's New, Prices, Features, Pictures

2021 Toyota 4Runner Review | What's new, prices, features, pictures

Like the canyons and mountains through which it traverses, the Toyota 4Runner is timeless. Mechanically, this latest 2021 edition is pretty much the same truck that debuted 12 years ago – an eternity in car terms. On the one hand, that's great: it has the same rugged truck-based chassis, capable suspension, ample clearances and bulletproof reliability that makes it a darling among off-roaders everywhere (and keeps its residual values sky-high). Its abundant interior space has also allowed it to be a realistic alternative to more family-friendly crossovers.

On the other hand, the 2021 Toyota 4Runner cannot escape the ravages of time. The carry-over engine produces less horsepower than a V6 Camry, the transmission has five (!) fewer gears than a Ford Explorer or Chevy Tahoe's, the fuel economy is a truly dismal 17 mpg combined, and calling the handling "imprecise" would be an understatement. The interior is also closer to the antique end of scale, though substantial tech updates last year at least ushered it into this century.

Nissan Gives The Armada's Overseas Sibling The Go - Fast Nismo Treatment

Nissan gives the Armada's overseas sibling the go-fast Nismo treatment

Nissan injected some of the DNA that makes the GT-R a refined track car into the Patrol, a burly body-on-frame SUV sold as the Armada in the United States. Developed exclusively for markets in the Middle East, the Patrol Nismo gains what the firm describes as a race-inspired design, a sharper chassis, and a more powerful V8.

Don't get your hopes up: Nissan stopped short of stuffing the GT-R's twin-turbocharged V6 into the Patrol's engine bay. Instead, the Nismo keeps the standard SUV's 5.6-liter V8, but its output increases from 400 to 428 horsepower, while torque stays flat at 413 pound-feet. The same team of Takumi craftsmen that build the GT-R's engine by hand extracted the 28 additional horses, though how they upped the eight's output hasn't been revealed yet.
