Mazda's New Carbon Editions Are Blackout Models You Can't Get In Black
Virtually every automaker has embraced the blackout trend, but Mazda is going in a slightly different direction as they've announced three new Carbon Editions.
Based on the 2021 Mazda6, CX-5 and CX-9, the models have a "bold color scheme that helps represent individuality" while also exuding "strength and passion."
That’s stretching things a bit, but the vehicles have a Polymetal Gray exterior with black accents. The company didn’t go into specifics, but confirmed the models will have gloss black mirror caps and alloy wheels with a black metallic finish.

The special editions have a modestly revised interior with red leather seats, red stitching and black honeycomb trim. They’ll also come nicely equipped with heated front seats, a Bose audio system and Android Auto / Apple CarPlay compatibility. Mazda also said we can expect an assortment of i-Activsense safety features such as adaptive cruise control with stop and go, smart brake support and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
Additional information will be announced closer to launch, but the 2021 Mazda6 Carbon Edition will presumably be equipped with either a naturally aspired or turbocharged 2.5-liter engine. The entry-level unit produces 187 hp (139 kW / 190 PS) and 186 lb-ft (252 Nm) of torque, while the turbocharged variant develops up to 250 hp (186 kW / 253 PS) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm).
The current CX-5 is offered with both engines, while the CX-9 is powered exclusively by the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder.
