Japan's industry ministry has come out with a draft action plan that would mark a clear departure from the nuclear power policy the government has taken since the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident.
The ministry presented the plan in an online meeting of an advisory panel on Monday.
The Japanese government has approved a record draft budget worth more than 106 trillion yen, or about 1 trillion dollars, for the next fiscal year.
The plan was approved at a cabinet meeting on Monday.
Japan's Defense Ministry has proposed that the production of new fighter jets that will succeed the Air Self Defense Force's F-2s should start in fiscal 2031.
The government plans to lead the development of stealth fighter jets with a view to international collaboration. It also plans to have the new jets serviced in Japan.
