Putin aides pressure Japan over sanctions

Aides to Russian President Vladimir Putin have criticized Japan in an apparent attempt to pressure the country for its sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday pointed out in a social media post that Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio proposes to cap the price of Russian oil at around half its current level. Medvedev said that would lead to significantly less oil on the market and push up prices.

NHK has learned that three abstract paintings have been found that are thought to be unknown early works of the late Japanese artist Okamoto Taro. He is known for numerous works, including the "Tower of the Sun" monument and the "Myth of Tomorrow" mural.

Okamoto moved to Paris in 1930 when he was 18. He lived there until the age of 29, when he returned to Japan to escape Nazi Germany's invasion. It was thought that all of his early works were destroyed when his home in Tokyo burned down while he was serving in the army in China.

Japan pledges 'maximum' support for Ukraine at its recovery conference

Delegates from countries at the Ukraine Recovery Conference have outlined their plans to help the country rebuild from the devastation inflicted by Russia's invasion.

Japan's State Minister for Foreign Affairs Suzuki Takako was among the delegates who spoke on Tuesday at the event in Lugano, southern Switzerland. Representatives from the governments of Ukraine and about 40 other countries are taking part. The World Bank and other international bodies are also participating.

Tokyo COVID cases top 5,000 for first time since April

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 5,302 new cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday. This is the first time the daily tally in the capital has topped 5,000 since April 28.

The latest case count is up by 2,788 from a week ago, marking the 18th straight day of week-on-week increases.

Tropical storm Aere becomes low-pressure system

The Japan Meteorological Agency says tropical storm Aere has become a low pressure system after making landfall in Nagasaki Prefecture in western Japan early Tuesday. Weather officials continue to warn of heavy rainfall in many parts of the country.

Rain and winds intensified in Kyushu as the storm approached. More than 120 millimeters of rain per hour are believed to have fallen in parts of Nagasaki, Fukuoka and Kumamoto prefectures.
