Survey: 84% of smaller firms yet to pass on higher costs

A new survey indicates that small and medium-sized firms in Japan are struggling to pass on higher costs to customers. Most said they have not yet been able to raise prices to reflect soaring raw materials costs amid the weakening yen.

Tokyo-based credit union Johnan Shinkin Bank surveyed 670 smaller firms last month. Eighty-four percent of the companies said they have not been able to raise prices to cover all of the higher costs, or any of them.

Japan's Imperial Household Agency says Emperor Naruhito will undergo a medical examination of his prostate after a blood test showed a slightly concerning tendency.

The agency said on Monday that the level of a protein called PSA in his blood sample was a little higher than normal.

Japanese lawmakers to visit Taiwan

A nonpartisan group of Japanese lawmakers will visit Taiwan for the first time in three years. The trip comes amid China's increasing military pressure on Taiwan.

About 20 members of the group working to promote exchanges with Taiwan are expected to take part in the three-day visit starting on Saturday.
