Heavy snow forecast again in hard hit areas

Weather officials in Japan warn of more heavy snow this weekend, mainly in mountainous areas of the Hokuriku and Kanto-Koshin regions.

A strong cold air mass brought record snowfall this week to mountainous areas in Niigata and neighboring Gunma prefectures. Blizzards left more than 2,000 vehicles stranded for many hours on an expressway.

The Meteorological Agency says snow is falling again on Saturday mainly in mountainous areas of the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions. It is expected to intensify through Sunday.

During the 24 hours through Sunday morning, about 100 centimeters of snowfall is expected in the Hokuriku region including Niigata, 80 centimeters in the Kanto-Koshin region, 60 centimeters in Tohoku, and 40 centimeters in Hokkaido.

Weather officials predict in the 24 hours through Monday morning, the Hokuriku region including Niigata will have up to 70 centimeters of snowfall, Kanto-Koshin 60 centimeters, Tohoku 50 centimeters, and Hokkaido 40 centimeters.

Weather authorities are warning of possible traffic disruptions.
