28 Self-Defense Force members test positive

Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force says 28 of its personnel have contracted the coronavirus, probably at a barbecue party.

Officials of the GSDF say that the 28 members from 24 camps across Japan had been confirmed infected by Monday.

They were among about 190 female GSDF members who took part in an education course from July through September at the force's Camp Asaka, which straddles Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture.

The 28 were part of a class of 44 personnel who went on a bus trip and had a barbecue party on September 26 on their holiday in Saitama Prefecture. The bus belongs to a private company.

The officials believe that the participants failed to maintain appropriate distances on the chartered bus and take other precautions against the virus.

They apologized for concerns that the incident has caused among the public and vowed to do all they can to prevent the spread of the virus.
