50% of flights fom China, S.Korea to be diverted

Japan's transport minister says about half of the flights from China and South Korea will be affected by the government's request to be diverted to Narita or Kansai airports.

All passenger planes from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, and South Korea will only be allowed to land at Narita near Tokyo and Kansai near Osaka. The Japanese government is tightening controls on inbound travelers to curb the number of coronavirus infections.

Transport minister Kazuyoshi Akaba told reporters on Fiday that 230 of 440 flights from China, Hong Kong, and Macau currently use 14 airports other than Narita and Kansai in a week.

He said 300 of the 620 flights per week from South Korea land at 15 airports.

This means that a total of 530 flights will have to change their destinations.

The government is also asking maritime service operators to suspend their passenger services between Japan and China, or South Korea.
