Coronavirus cases in Japan increase

The number of confirmed coronavirus infections in Japan has exceeded 8,200 as of Wednesday morning. The figure includes people found positive in airport quarantine checks, health ministry officials and those who returned to Japan on chartered planes.

As of 11:30 a.m., 30 new cases, including 18 in Hiroshima Prefecture, were reported, bringing the total to 8,203.

The 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship brings the total to 8,915.

One more death was confirmed on Wednesday, bringing the number of fatalities to 175, including 12 from the ship.

Tokyo tops the list of prefectures with the most infections at 2,319. Osaka is second with 894, followed by Kanagawa with 579, Chiba with 502, Saitama with 452, Fukuoka with 409 and Hyogo with 404.

Health ministry officials say 158 people were in serious condition as of Tuesday, including six from the cruise ship.

The officials say 1,497 had recovered and left hospital. Of these, 853 were diagnosed in Japan, while 644 were infected on the ship.
