Coronavirus cases in Japan top 30,000

Japanese authorities confirmed 468 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday. This brings the total number of infections in the country to more than 30,000, including over 700 cases who were identified onboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship docked near Tokyo earlier this year.

The total number of cases in Japan now stands at 30,208. That includes cases found during airport quarantine checks and 712 cases on the Diamond Princess.

The death toll has reached 1,007, including 13 from the cruise ship.

The health ministry says that as of Friday, 68 people had developed severe symptoms.

21,987 have been discharged from hospital, including 659 who were onboard the Diamond Princess.
