'Demon Slayer' film tops 20 bil. yen mark

The animated movie "Kimetsu no Yaiba," or "Demon Slayer," has earned 20 billion yen in its first 24 days in theaters across Japan. It reached the milestone much faster than the 59 days it took the 2001 animated fantasy film "Spirited Away."

The film's distributor, Toho, says more than 15.3 million people watched the movie in theaters from October 16 to Sunday. It raked in 20.4 billion yen, or nearly 200 million dollars.

The animated feature has become the sixth film in Japan to top the 20-billion-yen mark in box office revenue, and is ranked fifth overall in earnings, overtaking "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," released in 2001.

The "Kimetsu no Yaiba" movie is an adaptation of a hit manga series. The story, set in Japan about a century ago, is about a boy who fights with demons. The film is a sequel to a TV anime series which was aired last year.
