Empress Masako marks 57th birthday

Japan's Empress Masako marked her 57th birthday on Wednesday.

In a statement released by the Imperial Household Agency, the Empress said this year has reminded her of the importance and value of human life. She said it has been painful to see the level of devastation caused around the world by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Empress expressed sincere respect and gratitude to health care workers who are devoting themselves day and night to save lives and curb the spread of the virus.

She described it as heartbreaking to see that so many people are facing economic hardship such as bankruptcy and job loss.

The Empress made clear her heartfelt desire to overcome challenges presented by the pandemic together with the Japanese people.

She said it is unfortunate she has to refrain from communicating with people in person, but noted that she has begun performing her official duties online.

She is thankful to be given the opportunity to connect with the Japanese people online and would appreciate such interaction in the future.
