Expert: Evacuate from typhoon despite pandemic

An epidemiology expert is urging residents in the path of a typhoon to evacuate without hesitation regardless of the threat of the coronavirus.

Kaku Mitsuo of Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University says some people may feel wary of going to crowded shelters due to the risk of infection.

But he says effective preventive measures can be put in place at shelters, and adds that the most important thing when there is a threat of a typhoon or flooding is to evacuate to a safe place.

He says it is essential to wear a face mask and maintain a distance of one meter from other families whenever possible.

Kaku advises opening windows for five to 10 minutes every hour for ventilation when rain and wind are not at a hazardous level.
