Handball star arrested on suspicion of violence

Japanese veteran handball star Miyazaki Daisuke has been arrested on suspicion of violence against a female acquaintance.

Police say the 39-year-old is suspected of pulling her hair at a hotel in Nagoya City early on Monday morning.

The woman reported the incident to police, who questioned Miyazaki before arresting him. The police say Miyazaki denied the allegation.

Miyazaki was reportedly drunk at the time of the incident.

The Japan Handball Association declined to comment on the incident, saying the group is still trying to confirm what happened.

Miyazaki was an ace player for Japan's national handball team for many years on the strength of his high jump shots.

After playing for the Osaki Electric team in Japan's premier league from 2003, Miyazaki moved to Spain's top league in 2009. He was the first Japanese male athlete to play there.

He returned to Osaki Electric the following year, and played until March 2019. The handball star then joined a university club and said he is aiming to take part in the Tokyo Olympics.
