Japan coronavirus cases top 6,800

The number of confirmed coronavirus infections in Tokyo and other areas has soared, pushing the total in Japan to 6,854.

As of 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, 674 new cases were reported across the country.

The figure includes 14 people who returned from China on chartered planes, and 127 people who are health ministry or quarantine officials, or were found to have the virus during arrival checks at airports.

The addition of 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship brings the tally to 7,566.

The death toll stands at 141, including 12 from the ship.

The Japanese capital saw 197 new cases on Saturday.

By prefecture, Tokyo tops the list of infections with 1,902.

Osaka is second with 766, followed by Kanagawa with 512, Chiba with 416, Saitama with 363, Hyogo with 358, Fukuoka with 332, Aichi with 321 and Hokkaido with 255.

Health ministry officials say that, as of Friday, 125 people were in serious condition, including eight from the cruise ship.

The officials say 1,353 people had recovered and left hospitals as of Friday.

Of those people, 714 were diagnosed in Japan, while 639 were infected on the cruise ship.
