Japan coronavirus infections top 9,000

The number of confirmed coronavirus infections in Japan has exceeded 9,000 as of Thursday evening. The figure includes people determined to be positive during airport quarantine checks, health ministry officials, and individuals who returned to Japan on chartered planes.

283 new cases were confirmed across the country, bringing the total to 9,005.

The 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship brings the total to 9,717.

Four more deaths were confirmed on Thursday, bringing the number of fatalities to 195, including 13 from the ship.

Tokyo tops the list of prefectures with the most infections at 2,595. Osaka is second with 968, followed by Kanagawa with 649, Chiba with 551, Saitama with 519, Hyogo with 453 and Fukuoka with 436.

Health ministry officials say 173 people were in serious condition as of Wednesday, including five from the cruise ship.

The officials say 1,546 had recovered and left hospital. Of these, 901 were diagnosed in Japan, while 645 were infected on the ship.
