Japan helping Pakistan fight locust swarms

Japan is joining international efforts to help Pakistan control locust swarms that are damaging crops.

Japan's government says it plans to work with other parties, including Japanese aid groups, to provide insecticides to Pakistan.

China has already offered equipment to spray insecticides and sent experts on farming to assess crop damage.

Beijing has been working with Islamabad to build an "economic corridor" as part of its Belt and Road initiative aimed at creating a huge economic zone.

Pakistani government sources told NHK that China has also been strengthening bilateral ties in the farming sector and is taking the initiative in helping with pest control.

The South Asian nation has also received aid from other countries. Turkey has provided aircraft for crop-dusting, while Britain and South Korea have supplied insecticides.
