Marumori Town Remembers Typhoon Hagibis Victims

Marumori town remembers Typhoon Hagibis victims

One year has passed since Typhoon Hagibis made landfall in Japan. Bereaved families in a northeastern town have offered prayers for the victims of the disaster.

About 100 people attended a memorial ceremony on Monday in Marumori, Miyagi Prefecture.

The typhoon killed 11 people in the town and one person is still missing. The town's death toll was the highest in the prefecture where 22 people lost their lives.

Mayor Hoshina Kunio said no words can console the families who suddenly lost loved ones. He pledged to take steps to ensure that such a disaster will never be repeated.

Otsuki Keita, who lost his mother, gave a speech on behalf of the bereaved families.

Otsuki said he has constantly asked himself why he couldn't save his mother a year ago, but he wants to overcome his sorrow so she can see him moving forward.
