More coronavirus infections reported in Japan

Japan reported the highest daily count of 71 infections with the new coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the total to 1,211.

The figure was provided by the health ministry and local governments. It includes 14 cases confirmed among people who returned from China's Hubei Province on chartered flights.

By prefecture, Tokyo has 171 cases, including 17 new infections. Hokkaido has 163 cases, followed by Aichi with 148, Osaka with 142, Hyogo with 118, and Kanagawa with 83.

When 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship are included, the total number of infections now stands at 1,923.

The number of fatalities from the virus is 53, including 10 from the cruise ship.

The health ministry says 65 people, including 10 from the Diamond Princess, were in serious condition as of Tuesday.

It says 891 people, including 301 who were infected in Japan and 590 from the cruise ship, have recovered and left hospital.
