Msdf's Middle East Mission To Be Extended

MSDF's Middle East mission to be extended

The Japanese government has decided to extend by another year the Maritime Self-Defense Force's mission in Middle East waters to ensure safe navigation for vessels related to Japan.

Japan deployed a destroyer and patrol aircraft for its intelligence-gathering mission classified as a study and research activity under the ministry's establishment law.

The one-year mission, which was endorsed by the Cabinet last year, will expire on December 26.

The government says after studying the mission's activities, it has decided to extend it for another year, citing the need to continue intelligence gathering.

Cabinet ministers are to formally approve the plan and report the approval to the Diet.
