Nearly 20 to run in Tokyo gubernatorial race

Nearly 20 people have so far announced their intention to run in Tokyo's gubernatorial election. Campaigning will kick off on Thursday.

On Monday, Yamamoto Taro, the leader of opposition party Reiwa Shinsengumi, told reporters that he will run in the election to be held on July 5th.

Incumbent Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko announced last Friday that she will seek a second term in office.

Other contenders include the former head of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, Utsunomiya Kenji, the former deputy governor of Kumamoto Prefecture, Ono Taisuke, and the leader of the Party of Protecting People from NHK, Tachibana Takashi.

Thirteen other people have announced their candidacy as of Monday afternoon.
