Nishimura urges closer analysis of virus cases

Japan's minister in charge of the coronavirus response is recommending more detailed analysis of infection cases to better tackle the outbreak.

Economic Revitalization Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi was speaking to reporters on Friday. He referred to the nationwide tally of daily new cases that topped 1,000 on Thursday for the first time since August 21.

Nishimura said that overall, reports of daily new cases have remained flat or are on a slight increase. He said he was told that infections do not appear to be expanding widely in Tokyo, when figures are based on the dates when people developed COVID-19 symptoms.

He noted that reports of new cases should be analyzed on a weekly basis.

Nishimura added that it is important to analyze the trend by examining when a person developed symptoms, and not when his or her case was reported. He said he has asked experts to quickly come up with this type of analysis.
