Passengers rescued from sinking ship in Japan

A ship carrying elementary school students and teachers has been hit by a drifting object in western Japan. All people on board were rescued before it sank.

The Japan Coast Guard say officials received a report on Thursday afternoon that a ship traveling off Kagawa Prefecture's Sakaide City had collided with an object and water was flowing into the vessel.

Sixty-two people, including sixth graders and teachers, were on the 19-ton ship. They were reportedly on a cruise in the waters as part of a school trip.

All of them were rescued. Three of them, including two pupils, have been taken to hospital as they developed symptoms of hypothermia.

Reports say the ship later went down.
