Police chief, deputy test positive for coronavirus

Police in Kobe, western Japan, say a station chief and his deputy have contracted the coronavirus. The two officers had attended a welcome party at a pub late last month.

A total of 10 infections have now been confirmed at Kobe Nishi Police Station. Some of the officers had attended the party for the new station chief.

Other officers will temporarily assume the duties of station chief Kitayama Masaki and deputy chief Yokoyama Takayuki while they undergo treatment.

About 120 officers have been self-isolating at home.

Officers from the prefectural police headquarters have been sent to the station to support its operations.
