Record Sept. temperature of 40 degrees in Japan

The mercury reached a dangerous 40.2 degrees Celsius in Niigata Prefecture on Thursday -- the first time anywhere in Japan that temperatures have hit the 40- degree mark in the month of September.

The record temperature for September was observed in the city of Sanjo near the Sea of Japan coast shortly before 2:00 p.m.

Weather officials say temperatures are soaring, mainly in coastal areas on the Sea of Japan, due to the impact of Typhoon Maysak. They are urging the highest level of caution against heatstroke in these places.

Officials explain that the typhoon moved over the Sea of Japan after striking the Korean Peninsula.

But strong southerly winds are blowing toward the typhoon. They are forming hot, dry foehn winds that are blowing down over the mountains.

As of 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, the temperature had reached 40.0 degrees in the city of Tainai, also in Niigata Prefecture, 39.1 degrees in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, and 38.6 degrees in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture.
