Scorching temperatures continue in Japan

Temperatures neared 40 degrees Celsius in many parts of Japan on Monday as a heat wave continues to grip the country.

At 10 minutes past noon, the mercury rose to 41.1 degrees in the central Japanese city of Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture. The figure equals the national record set in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture, in July 2018.

Daytime highs topped 39 degrees in parts of central and western Japan, including the prefectures of Gifu, Miyazaki, Nagano, Nara and Kochi.

Record regional highs were reported at 26 observation points.

The heat wave is expected to last until around Friday in eastern and western Japan, and until around Thursday in northeastern Japan.

Weather and health officials are urging people to take precautions against heatstroke.
