Severe tropical storm Chan-hom skirts Japan

Japan's Meteorological Agency says Severe Tropical Storm Chan-hom is moving east-northeast along the Pacific coast.

Officials are urging people to be on the alert for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, swollen rivers, violent winds and high waves.

Rain continues to fall mainly on the Pacific side of the Kinki region and eastern Japan. Extremely heavy rain of 70 millimeters per hour was observed on Miyake Island in the Izu Islands.

The Meteorological Agency has issued a heavy rain emergency warning for Miyake Village and Mikurajima Village in the Izu Islands.

The rain has caused landslides in Mie Prefecture and Hachijojima Island in the Izu Islands. No one was injured.

Local governments throughout the affected regions have already issued evacuation orders and advisories.

Very strong winds are also expected in western Japan through Saturday, and on the Pacific side of eastern Japan through Sunday.

More than 10 domestic flights were canceled on Saturday. Airlines are calling on passengers to get the latest information from their websites.
