Severe tropical storm skirts Japan

Severe tropical storm Chan-hom is skirting Japan. The Meteorological Agency has switched its heavy rain alert for Tokyo's southern remote islands from the highest emergency warning to a warning.

However, weather officials continue to urge people to remain on the alert against flooding and landslides.

A warning for heavy rain is in place for two islands---Miyakejima and Mikurajima, about 200 kilometers south of Tokyo. At one point, the area was hit by more than 80 millimeters of rain per hour. The downpour triggered multiple landslides.

Elsewhere in the Izu Islands, landslides were also reported on Hachijojima Island.

Local governments throughout the affected regions have already issued evacuation orders and advisories.

Strong winds are also expected on the Pacific side of eastern Japan through Sunday.

Airlines are calling on travelers to get the latest information from their websites.
